Chapter Sixteen

Cassiel put away his crystals after his patient left. His mind was in a tangle of emotion with fear playing the starring role. When he’d left last night, Kiernan had been distant which made him worry that his fairytale ending might be a little tougher for him to have.

He’d known that the men who came and went in his life were just a dress rehearsal for the love he would one day find. Now that he’d found that one true love, the man didn’t seem too eager to accept him. The worst part was they had connected from the moment they met and last night had been a deeper energetic connection.

He sat down at his desk to review his notes on the patients he’d seen this morning when a knock sounded on his door. He sighed, glad for the excuse to put the inevitable off for a while. His mind was a whirligig refusing to focus, and he’d have to go over the notes again later anyway.

“Come in.” Kiernan wasn’t getting off that easy though, so the man may as well brace himself for a fight, he decided firmly.

“Hello, Cassiel.”

“Hi,” he said. “I’m a little surprised to see you.”

Jacinto Alvarez nodded as he made his way across the room. “How are you?”

“Oh, I’m fine,” he said with a shrug. “How are you?”

“I’m good.” Jacinto gave him a friendly smile.

“Have a seat. Can I get you anything?”

“No, thanks,” he said. “I just stopped by to see how you were.”

“Your seer must have told you something.” Cassiel made a face. His emotions weren’t bleeding out of him in spite of his confusion at Kiernan’s reaction to what he’d told him last night.

“Riley said your mate’s life was in danger and possibly yours as well,” he answered.

“Maybe.” Cassiel sighed. “He was attacked on the astral plane yesterday, and I went to help him.”

“Oh?” He frowned. “Your bond must be strong already for you to find him and get to him on the astral so quickly.”

Most Psy understood the astral world in theory but not many of them knew exactly how to work with the various astral planes let alone manipulate their energy or the energy of the astral world itself. For him it was just a talent he’d been born with.

“Getting to him was the easy part,” he answered. “My mother said my grandmother was adept at moving around the astral plane.”

“So am I,” Jacinto told him.

“Oh.” He smiled. “I guess I got it honest.”

Jacinto studied him a long time. “This is so new to us, Cassiel,” he said calmly. “None of us expected our offspring from our last lifetime to find us in this one.”

“If you had kids, you should have,” he retorted flippantly. “Just because you died, doesn’t mean your bloodline did.”

“We cut a lot of ties a few months back, but the lines of our offspring were left open, uncut because we thought we were only dealing with this generation’s children,” Jacinto went on. “So you’re still tied to me, and will be immortal.
